A space for children to discover disability and difference. This arts-based programme engages the school community in understanding equality and access.

The level of children and young people's awareness of disability is often overlooked. ‘Disability' is a subject that is rarely given space for discussion in infant and primary schools. Yet at this age children are more open and accepting of many new ideas and stimulus.

A recent project run by ‘Booktrust' involved writers and illustrators going into schools with the aim of giving children a voice about the way disability is portrayed in children's books. A report on the project stated:

"The vast majority of the participants, who did not consider themselves disabled, in the obvious sense of the word admitted that they had not thought about the subject before"

Kazzum has devloped, in conjunction with SHAPE (www.shapearts.org.uk), a workshop programme that gives children the opportunity to use drama and creative arts to explore the concept of people being disabled by society's barriers and attitudes and what could happen if we attempt to remove them.

Everybody's Different gives children the opportunity to explore obstructions to disability within a familiar environment and investigate how to overcome them in a safe and creative atmosphere.
